Fashion Magazines
The growth of the new media industry has signaled an array of changes for the magazine industry. Although at first the expansion of the internet seemed detrimental to the print industry, as with the development of the web in the late 1990s magazine launches began to stifle and circulation dipped. The two forms of media have now learned ways to co-exist together and many magazines are now embracing this new form as and accompaniment to the print version. The fashion sector of the magazine industry is at the forefront of these changes, and many magazines now have online versions of their print magazine which is in altering the way the fashion magazine industry generates readership, advertisers and extra finance. To establish the ways in which fashion magazines are using new media forms I have looked at the websites for both some of the most popular and niche print fashion magazines, and assessed their content and design style.

Over dinner at Milan Fashion Week last February, I got to talking to Bandana Tewari, Fashion Features Director of Vogue India, about the renewed energy in London fashion. Naturally, her first question was what Indian designers were doing to contribute to the London scene, particularly as India continues to emerge for a centre for world-class design.
The result of our conversation is this Vogue India article on Indian designers based in London. While writing the piece, I got to know three Indian designers with three amazing stories, each of which started in India and subsequently took them all over the world, until they finally ended up in London.
Between them, Ashish Gupta, Saloni Lodha and Aseef Vaza have lived and worked in Toronto, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Florence, Paris and New York -- bringing quintessentially cosmopolitan energy to London's design and fashion community.

Out of Fashion: An Antholoogy of Poems
In Out of Fashion Carol Ann Duffy selects the best and most stylish contemporary poets and asks them in turn to select their favourite poem, from another time or culture, which looks at how we dress, or undress, how we cover up or reveal. In these vibrant poems, we are shown how clothes, fashion and jewellery are both a necessary and luxurious, a practical and sensual, a liberating or repressing part of our lives.

BOLLYWOOD: A Book on Shah Rukh Khan En Route
On Friday, I received a galley copy of a brand-new book entitled "King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema" by Anupama Chopra (click to magnify the cover on the left). She's a well-known Mumbai-based film journalist - she writes for India Today, has a movie show on NDTV and wrote "Sholay: The Making of a Classic." The book is coming out in August and SAJA is going to co-host an event with the Indo-American Arts Council.
As someone who doesn't watch a lot of recent Bollywood movies (I prefer pre-"Sholay" Hindi movies and Malayalam movies of every vintage), I realized I don't know enough about SRK and today's Bollywood. So I am looking forward to reading this book. The two most recent books to feature Bollywood that I have read are Suketu Mehta's nonfiction "Maximum City: Bombay Lost & Found" and Vikram Chandra's fictional "Sacred Games."
If you are a journalist interested in the book, you can contact publicist Sri Kaushal at sri[at] - the publication date is Aug. 27, 2007.
[There are a couple of SAJA connections to this book: among the acknowledgments is TV producer and filmmaker Raeshem Nijhon. Chopra also thanks Suketu Mehta as well as Anna Ghosh, her literary agent (who has worked with several SAJA members). And she thanks Vikram Chandra, her brother.]

Edith Head: The Life and Times of Hollywood's Celebrated Costume Designer
Edith Head is widely considered the most important figure in the history of Hollywood costume design. Her career spanned nearly half a century and included such classic films as "Rear Window" and "Sunset Boulevard," Her private life and professional achievements have been the subject of speculation since she rose to the top in the late 1940s. Ruthlessly competitive and intensely secretive, Head had few close friends and many detractors. Her longtime friend, protege, and confidant David Chierichetti offers a privileged glimpse into the personality behind the famously impenetrable "schoolmarm" facade and a comprehensive account of her creative process.

100 Years of Fashion Illustration by Cally Blackman offers up over 400 images of fashion as a comprehensive survey from the past century. Not only a collection of illustrations, but a traipse through the history of fashion as well, this book is easy on the eye and makes everything old seem new again, reminding us of the value of traditional techniques and perspectives. The glamour of fashion has always been very much present, but so has a combination of its levity, simplicity and elegance.
Paperback, 384 pages. Laurence King 2007, $26.40 at Amazon.
