Henna powder itself is green in color, but the stain it leaves behind is usually an orange-red color. When colors are added to natural henna, reactions can be mild to severe. This traditional Indian holiday is a celebration many Indian women participate in every year that honors their husbands and their god-sisters.Many years ago before telephones, cars, and trains, when Indian women married, they went to live with their new husband and their in-laws. This often meant leaving their friends and family far behind, leaving the girl without a confidant to talk to and help work out issues with her new family. To ease this transition, during the marriage ceremony another bond was sanctified between the bride and another women who would become the bride's life long god-sister or god-friend. The women would become sisters and best friends, giving the new bride a means to have someone close to confide her worries and hopes in privacy and confidence. Karwa Chuth originally was a celebration of this relationship between women and the marriage that brought them together. They would exchange gifts of food, glass bangles, henna, and bindi, and rejoice in each other's company along with the loving happy relationship between husband and wife.The bride's in-laws would also give her gifts on this day to celebrate the good fortune of having a kind and loving daughter-in-law, and to show her how much they love her. As the necessity of god-sisters has waned, the Karwa Chuth celebration has gravitated more towards celebrating the well-being, prosperity, and longevity of a woman's husband. A day long fast, from sun up to sun down, and prayer accompany the tradition of gifts. The fast comes from the Story of Queen Veeravati who both accidentally cursed and relivened her husband with the help of Goddess Parvati.

During our visit to Artesia, sometimes known as "Little India," I bought these pink metal bangles. They are bright hot pink, with gold-colored glitter and little mirror chips pasted on them in patterns. They are cheap things - the asking price for a stack of four dozen was $15. I bought half a stack, and then gave away a dozen to a friend. Even still, the glitter and clash and sparkle of the remaining dozen catches the eye when worn - and the ear, as they delicately tinkle when you move.
The word "bangle" comes from Hindi. It is related to bangri or bangali, which refers to its shape - a ring around the arm. "Bangle" may also be related to bungri, which means "glass."
Indian girls buy glass bangles for all occasions, in colors that match their outfits. Special wooden racks are sold to display them safely. Most glass bangles, or kanch-ki-choodi are made by Muslim craftspeople in the city of Firozabad, in north central India, or in the city of Hyderabad, in Pakistan.
Firozabad, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is famous for its glassworks. Glass of all kinds is made here, including light bulbs and bottles and jars - but also beads, bangles, chandeliers, decorative wear.
Bangles are made in sizes, from tiny ones for little girls to extra large ones for larger hands. You're supposed to wear the smallest size that fits you - small glass bangles are less likely to break. When I shopped for glass bangles in the Bangle Bazaar in Artesia, the shopgirl sized me as a 2.8. The glass bangles are stored beneath a table holding CDs. I sat down on the floor and pawed through the stacks and boxes of glass bangles - although there were fabulous colors and varieties, it seemed like everything was a 2.6.

I finally found this package - they are black and gold, and quite elegant. There are two fancy bangles in the package, as well as skinny bangles decorated in three different patterns. Price? $9.

Eyebrow Shaping & Grooming

No matter how well groomed a woman might be otherwise, if her eyebrows are not equally well groomed, she will not have a fully well groomed appearance. Well defined eyebrows give a woman a polished look that shows how much she values her appearance. There are many ways of achieving nicely groomed eyebrows but we will discuss three of the most popular options here. Which you choose depends on your preference, hair type and skin sensitivity. These three methods of eyebrow shaping and grooming are threading, plucking and waxing. (Check out this cool video Eyebrow Shaping & Grooming )

Eyebrow Threading

Though Western women have fairly recently caught on to eyebrow threading, it is actually a centuries old practice that has its origins in India. It has been very popular among Middle Eastern women for a long time. Eyebrow threading was offered in salons and spas for Middle Eastern women for a long time before Western women developed an interest in it. Now it is becoming a more popular and preferred method of eyebrow grooming.
Eyebrow threading is accomplished by using a double strand of thread (usually cotton), twisting it to catch a line of hair in the selected area. Many women like the fact that it is faster than most other methods and more cleanly removes line of hair, often without causing the redness and irritation that plucking or waxing can cause.
It has also been found to be more precise than the other methods, too, when done by an experienced aesthetician. Be sure you do go to one who is very experienced, though, or you could have problems with hair breakage, uneven eyebrows, pain and ingrown hairs. It works better for fine hair than it does for coarse hair.

Plucking Eyebrows
This is perhaps the one method that most women have used at one time or another. It involves removing one hair at a time by grasping it with a pair of tweezers. Though it is an easy method, it can be time consuming. You can do it yourself, though and that makes it one of the most preferred methods. You will need good light and a mirror (a magnifying mirror is often preferred) that allows a good view of your eyebrows. I thoroughly recommend and wouldn’t be without it Tweezerman Mirror and Tweezer Kit. If you are bothered too much by the pain of the plucking, you can use ice to numb the area first. Then brush the eyebrow hair straight up with an eyebrow brush.
This makes it easy to see the hairs you want to remove. It is best to start at the point nearest your nose and work toward the temple, taking your time. So there is less pain and the hairs stay smooth, always pluck the hairs in the same direction as their growth.

Eyebrow Waxing
Waxing is a fairly quick method of removing unwanted hair from the eyebrows but can be rather painful. If your skin is very sensitive, this may not be a good method for you. Though it is better to have a professional do the waxing, you can do it yourself. If you do want to try it yourself, be sure you buy professional quality supplies to get the best results. You will first want to determine where the wax is to be applied. Brush your eyebrows into the defined shape you want so you can see the hair to be removed.
After warming the wax to the temperature recommended in the instructions, apply the wax in a thin layer to the unwanted hair with the applicator from the waxing kit. Be sure to apply it in the same direction the hair grows. Then place a small piece of muslin on the wax and carefully smooth it.
Use one hand to hold the skin taut and pull the muslin off with your other hand. It is best to work on small areas at a time to avoid taking too much hair off. Which ever method you choose, keeping your eyebrows well groomed is well worth the effort. You will not only look more polished but feel more confident in your appearance.

I'm a guy, so I don't understand women's psychology, and I don't understand women's fashion. I don't know why they'd want to wear sousaphones, but viva la difference.

Jefferson de Assi is clearly a friend of women everywhere, designing practical, everyday wear for the woman on the go. It's also awesome because apparently, "Sao Paulo Fashion Week" is held in "Sao Paulo". I like the tie-in.
And it's cool be because this woman maintains a look of elegance and attitude, despite being, you know, sucked into a sousaphone.
I'm told haute couture designers' creations rarely become, in toto, street wear at the consumer level. Rather, distilled, less-dramatic versions reach common fashion. So this particular outift may not make it as-is.
I think we can expect, for the fall, women to wear outfits portraying an attack by smaller brass instruments, like the trombone, or, obviously, flugelhorn.

Blue in its terrific variations is extremely popular this winter. Electric blue, ultramarine blue, rich midnight blue, light blue, navy and darker shades are all used in men clothes.

New Chronograph Model Created by Prominent Italian Designer
A new model of the Manometro Chronograph, has recently updated the prominent Manometro collection created by Giuliano Mazzuoli. The timepiece displays an oversized stainless steel case with polished finish. The boldly designed case measures 45.2 mm in diameter. The watch offers the choice between two dial variations ivory or black. Each option reveals brushed silver sub-dials.
Having maintained the distinctive detail of the initial Manometro model, the chronograph has the crown positioned at 2 o'clock. While the first Manomentro featured a standard crown, the new model has a screw-down crown to guarantee resistance to water and dust. Giuliano Mazzuoli will develop every new Manometro model with the screw-down crown.
Mazzuoli's timekeeping creations have always been characterized by artistic out-of-the-box approach to design. This time the designer has placed the sub-dials at 2 and 8 o'clock instead of sub-dials positioned 3 and 9 o'clock as featured by other watches. The sub-dials are in perfect harmony with the crown. The position of the pushers is also special they are found at the left-hand side of the case at 8 and 10 o'clock. The 8 o'clock button is responsible for the start-stop function, while the 10 o'clock button controls the reset function.
In the heart of Mazzuoli's Manometro Chronograph there beats a Dubois-Depraz automatic chronograph movement based on an ETA caliber. A hand-stitched lizard strap with ergonomic design finely completes the bold look of the timepiece.
Every Mazzuoli's watch from the Manometro collection has enjoyed huge success. The first Manometro model was inspired by a pressure gauge. DESCRIPTION
The Fashion Marketing Certificate offers the student marketing and business skills, basic knowledge of the fashion industry and an inside look at how apparel products are produced. It also introduces students to the activities that take place in buying, selling and promotion at the wholesale and retail levels.
The Fashion Marketing Certificate may be taken on its own or in conjunction with the Fashion Design and Technology Program. Courses provide an opportunity for students to explore the field of fashion. Students needing to prepare a portfolio for entry to the Fashion degree or diploma program often start out in this program. The certificate leads to some entry-level positions, mostly in retail, but as a one-year introductory theory-based program, it is recommended that students planning a career in fashion marketing consider a diploma or bachelor’s program in business or marketing.

Attendance at an orientation and portfolio assessment session are not required for this program. A leading apparel soft goods designer and marketer of an extensive range of women's and men's fashion apparel and accessories ranging from casual to dressy.

CHALLENGE:

The client required an assortment planning application that would allow creation of various assortment plan types (Strategic, Account, Divisional), perform top down, bottom up, and middle out assortment planning at both divisional and account level, and reconciliation of a divisional assortment plan to account plan to identify discrepancies.
The application was envisaged to provide features for micro-merchandizing (creating assortment plans specific to account door) for optimized product lines, and integration of merchandize financial planning process with assortment planning process.

SOLUTION

: Visionet Systems Inc. delivered the web based Business Planning System, a modified version of an earlier effort with a number of Mission Critical Enhancements. The workflow based system automated the entire plan creation, approval, and reconciliation process with a user friendly and practical solution that integrates seamlessly with other systems like manufacturing, POS, and ownership planning systems.

Fujitsu Unveils Fashion Hot Spot

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1996--Fujitsu Limited today launched 'Style Front' (http://www.stylefront.com/), the world's first multimedia website to focus on the fashion world. Fujitsu is one of the key organizers of the exposition. Grolier Interactive Europe oversees all aspects of the production, from editing and writing to online production of the French and English versions of Style Front.

India is the Newest Fashion Hot Spot
India is set to overtake China as the world's most populous nation by 2050 and designers like Nicole Miller are taking note. India’s luxury clothing and accessories business generates around $434 million in sales annually. Researchers estimate that by 2010, this figure will rise to $800 million. Nicole Miller is looking to sell her clothes and accessories to an Indian retail chain and may partner with a luxury apparel company to distribute the Nicole Miller label.
Other designers are holding back for now. For example, Oscar de la Renta Inc. is keeping an eye on India, but according to the chief executive officer of the company, India is too accessories driven to yield success for luxury apparel brands. Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Valentino are not hesitant though and have already launched stores in India. These designers have good reason to throw caution to the wind since week long weddings with 1,000 guests are common in India.

And I’m not just saying that because that’s the motherland for me. Women’s Wear Daily is reporting an influx of overseas buyers at Lakme Fashion Week, which started today. I predict in the next five years, more western designers are going to be showing there, making it just as large at NY Fashion Week.

Each design that is sold on ZenTrend.com has a customer review section so you can see what others have said about the pieces showcased. I absolutely love how each product sold on ZenTrend is given multiple pictures so that you can see exactly how the piece fits and the detail to the garment. A great example is of the Chiffon Halter Dress with Shell Belt; in the head to toe shot the detail in the belt and the small sequin design that outlines the neckline of the dress are barely visible. However, with the closeup image provided you get a clearer picture of what the dress looks like, giving you that mental imagdry as if you were right there in the store seeing it first hand.

Can Berlin Be Germany’s Fashion Capital

Watch out, Paris and Milan! Germany wants its own spot on the fashion map. But first it needs to establish a city to act as an actual fashion destination. So art-centric Berlin came to mind, which just held its own Fashion Week. It seemed like a good choice, given the hipster and art

quotient. But Berlin also has a less than stellar economy; the city suffers from high debt and unemployment. Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit calls the city "poor but sexy." Even the director of the German fashion association said at the start of the week, “Berlin doesn’t have any commercial dimension. Business is done in Düsseldorf.” Sigh.
But Berlin Fashion Week soldiered on, rolling out 120 shows including one for Vivienne Westwood's Anglomania label. And week's end, they held an awards ceremony that honored the one and only Karl Lagerfeld (he's German!), which he accepted from German supermodel Claudia Schiffer. And just as Lagerfeld took the stage to give his acceptance speech, it seemed perhaps Berlin had arrived at last! But then, the New York Times remembered Lagerfeld works in Paris, Schiffer lives in England, and the award's sponsor, German Elle, is based in Munich. But surely, Karl would make the world forget all that with his forward-looking acceptance speech!
“In the ’20s, German fashion played a leading role,” Mr. Lagerfeld said after receiving the award, adding that he was working on a book about the era.

Fashion G-spot for A/W 08

I think we all know that sex and fashion are intertwined, but

imagine my shock two Sundays ago when I was lazily reading my Style magazine from The Sunday Times---you know from the country that gave us the play No Sex Please We’re British---- when in the What’s In section at the front they informed me that the clavicle was the G-spot this A/W. I blushed instantly and then got a naughty smile…but more on that later. Then just a week ago I was watching my idols Trinny& Susannah makeover factory workers in their rage against sloppy dressing. For the first time maybe ever I saw a women who was a size 24 being made over. One of the things that the lovely Trinny was pointing out was with detailing up and around your face (beading, embellishment, etc) was very good for drawing the eye up and focusing attention on your face. And just like that you have a fashion trend that works for plus sized beauties.

There are so many different things that a person could point their finger at with respect to the poor state of developing countries—poor government, poverty, health care, education; the list goes on. I have chosen to focus my artwork on the health aspect of the problem. However, the fact remains that, to truly elevate the standard of living for those in developing regions, we must look at all the factors, because the development of a nation is not an easy process, nor is it a single-sided one. This is not to say that we should not focus on the different issues, we should just be able to see them in the context of the whole picture. For example, there are issues with poverty because the health and education systems (if at all existing) are not up to par. However, the health and education systems are in such a mess because of armed conflicts which destroy schools and hospitals and draw citizens into these violent clashes.

Pakistan's high maternal and infant mortality rates reflect the country's shortage of trained health workers and its inadequate health infrastructure in underserved districts throughout the country. Poor-quality water and sanitation and insufficient family planning resources exacerbate these problems in many regions. Moreover, alarming levels of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, pose a threat that extends beyond Pakistan's borders.
Since USAID's $168.9 million Health Program began in Pakistan in 2003, activities have focused on improving maternal and newborn health services, enhancing the accessibility and availability of family planning products, preventing the spread of major infectious diseases, and increasing access to safe drinking water. The program works in underserved districts in all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
Improving Maternal Health

The heart, one of the vital organs in the human body, is a powerful pump located behind and slightly to the left of the breastbone and between the lungs. It is a muscle about the size of your fist which contracts and expands using its own bio-electrical system, to continuously pump blood around the body to nourish and provide energy. The pumping of the heart is known as the cardiac cycle, which occurs about 72 times per minute and it pumps blood through network of vessels in the body.
The heart lies at the centre of these complicated network of blood vessels which include arteries and veins. The left side of the heart receives oxygen filled blood from the lungs and pumps it out through the 'arteries' around the body and the right side receives used up-blood containing carbon dioxide through the 'veins' and sends this blood to the lungs to get rid of the carbon dioxide and take in fresh oxygen.
The heart, in the simplest terms, consists of four chambers, two atria (upper chambers) and two ventricles (lower chambers). As the muscles of the heart relax, blood (oxygen filled blood from the lungs and carbon dioxide filled blood from the rest of the body) enters its various chambers. The atrium fill with blood and help move blood into the ventricle. The ventricle supplies the main force that pumps the blood out, through either the lungs or to the rest of the body. As the blood enters the heart, Flaps called valves close quickly to stop any blood leaking backwards and thus control the direction of blood flow. There are four valves; mitral and the tricuspid between the atria and the ventricles and other two, aortic and pulmonary through which blood enters and leaves the heart.

Excercise

Moderate exercise is one of the best things you can do to keep your heart and the rest of your body, healthy. Consult with your health provider before beginning a new exercise program. Exercise moderately and within your capabilities, but do it regularly. Exercise helps reduce stress and prevent obesity which in turn is associated with the development of heart disease, diabetes etc. It also helps people with diabetes control their blood sugar.

People who work out seriously and continuously for most of a decade has been seen to cut their age related decline of maximal heart rate in half. Between ages 40-50 check out your VO2 max, the maximum rate at which the muscles use oxygen during peak exercise. The old standard for calculating your target heart rate is (220- your age) x .85. For good cardio fitness, it is advisable to exercise aerobically 90 minutes per week minimum.

Alchohol (Ethyl alcohol or ethanol) made out of Fermented grain, fruit juice and honey is a depressant, and if taken in small amounts relaxes the mind and reduce anxieties. More and more studies have shown that ethanol increases levels of HDL cholesterol (the good stuff) , dilates blood vessels and keeps blood from clotting. But no more than two drinks per day is beneficial and more than that could be detrimental for health.

To be a decent fashion journalist you need the same qualities that are needed to be a regular journalist - an eye for a story, an ability to write, a sense of fairness. Although fashion is a frothy subject, you still need to be tough. So many of the stories that are around are empty PR-led affairs that are of no interest to the reader. Fashion needs to be treated just like any other features or news subject - pretending it's special, being all aloof and exclusive, can actually denigrate it. None of us at The Guardian went to fashion college, so training in the subject isn't really necessary. I had a place on an MA fashion journalism course, but couldn't afford the fees so I got a job on the Saturday magazine and then I moved over to features at the Daily Express. Wherever I've been since I've always written the odd style piece, so when my current job came up I had a good portfolio. With the proliferation of so many fashion blogs to rival the explosion of spiderwebs recently found at Wills Point texas (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/31/us/31spider.html?em&ex=1188705600&en=fbf002a0bb300d1f&ei=5087%0A), should old media fashion editors and reporters worry about the power of info and opinion shifting to the hands of the layman?
If you look carefully at what fashion bloggers are doing, the majority of the sites are more of a knee-jerk variety. Their viewpoints and world-views are merely reactions to what the established fashion press have presented in the media.
There are numerous categories of such fash blogs - or flogs, Ac.Stet’s shorthand -. Most however, fall within the bracket of those which are mostly based on everyday observations (e.g. The Sartorialist) of what is happening at a fashion event, or what people are wearing on the streets, at such events, which is very Bill Cunningham of NYT (old media).
There is also another breed of bloggers like Says The Asian Leprechaun or Bobble Bee, function like a diary chronicle of what happened that day in their life in the fashion industry.
There is very little in-depth analysis, or insightful commentarythat digs deeper within their observations. It’s very straight-forward reporting, more like a general surveillance.
That is the functionality of these fashion bloggers, each acts as one of the thousand-eye of a digital peacock in proud display of its majestic plummage. All very showy, not really an eye but a feathered abstraction of a known idea, but collectively, they form a full-fledged pattern of the general landscape in which they inhabit.

I’ve always been attracted to the magazine world. Ever since I was young, I would save old issues of magazines like The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, just so I could go back and reread articles written by such great writers as Dominick Dunne and Julia Reed. I was (and still am, at times) a complete magazine nerd. Ask me anything about Graydon Carter, Glenda Bailey or Anna Wintour and I am all over it.
That was the world I wanted to enter when I was younger, until I discovered the much more accessible and modern world of online journalism. Now, I’m hooked. However, there are still echoes of my interest in magazines lingering overhead.
Magazines get a lot of things wrong.
My ideal journalism job would be to work for a fashion or lifestyle publication where I can implement these technologies to make viewing, learning and sharing information on these topics much easier.
If I were feeling bold, I would even start a web site like this myself, and throw my hat into the dangerous web start-up arena. EEK!

It would seem that the state of fashion journalism here in New Zealand is of considerable interest to a lot of you, so I wanted to publish some of the feedback I've received.Yesterday was fascinating for me. After commenting on a great piece of journalism from TVNZ ondemand's show Media 7 – and on what I see as a huge amount of media coverage on New Zealand Fashion Week in the form of low standard journalism – plenty of diverse opinions came out. Going Artsy!

When fashion and art collide, it creates a wonderful piece of art. There are a lot of designers who have implemented art into their designs, and we’ve been seeing them quite a lot lately. Louis Vuitton seems to be one of many who always collaborates with a variety of artists, from Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Julie Verhoeven, to the late Stephen Sprouse and surely with many other artists in the future. The whimsical Prada fairy collection of Spring/Summer 2008 came from the beautiful artwork of James Jean. While Miu Miu has used Liselotte Watkins’s Harlequin illustrations for the Spring/Summer 2008 collection.

After flipping through the pages of ‘The Simpsons go to Paris with Linda Evangelista’ on Harper’s Bazaar August 2007, illustrated by Julius Preite, which has already been posted in our forum by uberboston. I’m sure some of you have read it a while ago.. Miuccia Prada has designed the costumes of Appleseed: Ex Machina, a sequel to 2004’s Appleseed, a futuristic Japanese 3D animation movie, which is scheduled to premiere in October this year in Japan, followed by other countries. Two costumes were designed for heroine-warrior Deunan Knute.The designer has accepted to do the costumes because she was inspired by the first movie. “Watching the previous ‘Appleseed,’ I thought that the expression of contrast in man and machine, violence and love was wonderful,” the designer said at a press conference for the movie in Tokyo, Japan. “I designed something contemporary that matches the movie’s feelings,” added Miuccia. WWD has reported that the movie appears to be connected to her Fall 2006 “Metropolitan Armor” collection. Meanwhile according to ELLE.com, it is more related to her Fall 2007 collection. I really can’t wait to view her ‘virtual’ designs in that animated movie. I think it’s absolutely brilliant to implement fashion into animation or visual arts. Having those two elements syncronized together, it totally shows how fashion has been moving forward to a new playground.

David Downton {fashion illustration}
When it comes to fashion I love collections that are filled with color, simple lines, and a bold mix of patterns. Then sometimes I like simple blocks of classic colors flowing along crisp clean lines. The fashion illustrations of David Downton reminds me of the latter. I love his illustrations and his use of neutral tones and watercolor & gouache. I commend those who use gouache to it fullest. I was first introduced to the medium in Color Theory class at SCAD…tricky little paint it can be!

Fashion is an applied art as it involves technical accuracy. Yet, I don't believe in creating fashion as purely an art form. Clothes are meant to enhance the body in the most beautiful way possible. Fashion is a creative discipline. The challenge is to create a range of apparel that is as fresh as it is innovative, season after season and looks at the human form with a new attitude each time.Historically, India has been globally acknowledged as a country for its rich textile heritage, but fashion, as an industry, continues to be challenged with several infrastructural and industry issues. Until recently, leading Indian designers primarily focussed on couture lines and wedding trousseaus. Over the last 4-5 years, as increasing number of people have joined the designer/fashion industry (designers, textile designers, models, make-up artists, hairstylists, stylists, photographers, etc). However, the target customer base has witnessed limited growth in the same period.
HEC RECOMMENDS DEGREE AWARDING STATUS For

PAKISTAN SCHOOL OF FASHION DESIGN LAHORE

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has recommended Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD), Lahore for grant of Charter to award its own degrees. The decision has been taken upon successful evaluation of feasibility report and inspection of academic, financial and physical infrastructure available with the School in relation to the ‘Criteria/Guidelines for Establishment of New University/Institution of Higher Education’ and considering future development plans for the up-gradation of faculties of School as envisaged by the Government.
Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD) was established by the Export Promotion Bureau, Ministry of Commerce in 1995. The School started its operations in affiliation with French fashion institutions. Presently, the School is offering 4-years Bachelors’ in Fashion Design and another in Fashion Marketing & Merchandising. For future, the School plans to introduce degrees in the fields of leather products, ceramics, foot-wear, gems, jewelry, fashion accessories, fashion journalism and fashion studies. It will also offer training in fashion photography, styling, multimedia visual presentations, packaging and concept brand image etc.

Lots of smart and influential people have considered fashion and clothing important. For example, Ben Franklin said, "Eat to please thyself, but dress to please others," and Mark Twain added to the Latin proverb "Clothes make the man" the dry observation that "Naked people have little or no influence on society." However, one of the nicknames that insiders use for the fashion industry -- sometimes affectionately, sometimes derisively -- is "the rag trade," as if all that fashion were about was mixing and matching leftover scraps to sell to the unsuspecting public. The truth lies somewhere between these extremes, but closer to the former. At its worst, fashion can seem terribly artificial and self-involved (Right Said Fred's song "I'm Too Sexy" springs to mind), but at its best, fashion can be a vital, exciting enhancement to personal appeal and self-esteem.

He was given a second chance but Asim Qadri, the CEO of Bridal Waves Co, has again managed to annoy both the senior and junior Pakistani fashion designers, even allegedly creating mistrust among their participating Indian counterparts at the Bridal Waves International Trade Fair that took place on November 21-23 in Karachi.But Qadri is no cowering dandy. No lying flat, as his detractors continue to belittle him, for this Lahore Chamber of Commerce alum who specializes in micro entrepreneurship development. “No one gave me a chance and no one will ever give me a chance. Bridal Waves is my passion where I had to dig deep. It is a home-grown platform to showcase Pakistani designers to the international fashion arena. I’ll continue with Bridal Waves as long as I meet my costs and am able to build it up as a brand.

Nadya Mistry’s collection which other reviewers saw as experimental and with potential was one of the few collections from the Pakistani contingent of designers that had the ingredients of what is required to present at a what is hoped to be an international show. Mistry’s collection had her ‘signature’: a melange of bright colours which have evolved and transmuted into even more rare and eclectic variations; ‘growth’ with the addition of fused neon brights; fake lavender and orange fur used for dainty shrugs and capelets, and ‘extensive research’ into myriad Asian cultures including Chinese, Tibetan, Indian and Pakistani.

Over dinner at Milan Fashion Week last February, I got to talking to Bandana Tewari, Fashion Features Director of Vogue India, about the renewed energy in London fashion. Naturally, her first question was what Indian designers were doing to contribute to the London scene, particularly as India continues to emerge for a centre for world-class design.
The result of our conversation is this Vogue India article on Indian designers based in London. While writing the piece, I got to know three Indian designers with three amazing stories, each of which started in India and subsequently took them all over the world, until they finally ended up in London.

BOLLYWOOD: A Book on Shah Rukh Khan En Route
On Friday, I received a galley copy of a brand-new book entitled "King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema" by Anupama Chopra (click to magnify the cover on the left). She's a well-known Mumbai-based film journalist - she writes for India Today, has a movie show on NDTV and wrote "Sholay: The Making of a Classic." The book is coming out in August and SAJA is going to co-host an event with the Indo-American Arts Council.
As someone who doesn't watch a lot of recent Bollywood movies (I prefer pre-"Sholay" Hindi movies and Malayalam movies of every vintage), I realized I don't know enough about SRK and today's Bollywood. So I am looking forward to reading this book. The two most recent books to feature Bollywood that I have read are Suketu Mehta's nonfiction "Maximum City: Bombay Lost & Found" and Vikram Chandra's fictional "Sacred Games."

Be Prepared
The first step in figuring out what to wear to your interview is to do some research!
Find out what industry the firm is part of, talk to other people who have worked there if possible, even creep outside their office checking out what current employees are wearing if you want!
If you’re interviewing in the fashion industry, get to know the style of the company you’ll be working for. If it’s a designer, know their line and what it represents. If it’s a PR agency, know their clients and their styles, etc. This will help you with your own wardrobe choices.
Also, this sounds obvious but can sometimes get overlooked: take note if they specify a certain dress code on their website, in an email to you or in the job listing! (For some help in decoding what "business casual" and other terms mean, check out my article on business dress code basics.)
If they don’t specify what dress code you’re supposed to wear, assume that they want professional business dress, and go as conservative as you can with your wardrobe. It’s always better to be over dressed than under dressed!

If you’re going to be working with clothes, you need to show the people hiring you that you know how to dress well!
If your interview is with a fashion house, know their style aesthetic and attempt to show them that you fit with their brand. Don’t wear their label head to toe, but take note of what the designer’s style is and attempt to show them that you understand it.
If you’re interviewing with a fashion magazine, you should go trendier than normal to show that you understand current fashion. Don’t be over-the-top though: you still need to look professional. Even though it might be a dream job, it’s still a job! Remember that when you’re getting dressed for it.

The Pakistani Fashion Industry

Musharrafs government has been hailed as a progressive government, which has allowed the freedom of expression to the performing arts and a greater exposure to the fashion industry in almost every sense (pun intended!!!). The fashion industry claims to have progressed in leap and bounds after the unfortunate bahawulpur air crash of a particular army dictator. As one of Pakistan’s most controversial critic puts it the contemporary Pakistani fashion scenario comprises of men who talk like women and women who talk like men and walk like they’re in Paris, wearing clothes which reflect the lack of human evolution. Its time we paid some attention to how this industry has evolved over the past decade and where it is headed in the future or rather herded into the future by the chosen few.

The arrival of democracy or what we call the Pakistani version of it in the late 80’s heralded the dawn of a new era in the Pakistani fashion scene. Suddenly a bevy of female designers sprang up, who because of their lack of skill and know how of any other technical or business skills had no choice but to upgrade the status of a tailor to a designer. It’s interesting the way these upper class female socialites selected fashion designing as their newfound love and in some cases their only love (who cares about family!!!). It’s suggested that most of this new class of designers chose fashion because the other activity to make them appear busy i.e. social work had proven too hectic and demanding for their fragile souls. This was supplemented by the publication of new fashion magazines which worked hard to create a niche for themselves. Similarly a whole new generation of Models both male and female came up. This arrival of new faces in the modeling scene has not stopped since then. It seems it is proportional to the divorce rate and as the number of single parent children or broken homes increases the number of models would keep on increasing.

The initial take off was very slow but during the second government of Benazir Bhutto there was a sudden boom in the fashion industry. State Patronage and support helped the industry make people realize that it was here to stay. People like Rana Sheikh who was MD of PTV at that time promoted the cause of the fashion industry and in the process her daughter as a budding model as well to a great extent (the intentions might not always be true to the cause!!!). All this industry needed was to make a grand entrance on the national scene and the 1996 World Cup provided that chance. Numerous fashion shows along with a Basant Festival were held. The silent but definite transformation of basant as a festival for the common masses and the frustrated youth to an extravaganza for the elite had begun. The result of this metamorphosis is that these days there is a ban on kite flying which was the original attraction of the basant festival for the poor and young on one hand while on the other hand there is no limit and control on the number of Mujraas ooops!!! Culture and variety shows along with balls and dance parties one can hold on roof tops and lawns. Certainly a stark contrast to the Lahore of yesteryears. It’s ironic that the same important people who in public forums would go on and on about the plight of red light area have no objection on dance performances on stage which are on their way to bordering on vulgarity, when they attend these special shows sponsored by Multinationals and government supervised organizations like PHA and PTV

Moving back to the fashion industry; one of the major advantages it was able to gain for itself in the mid nineties was somehow convince the foreign office and the Export Promotion Bureau that it could prove vital in the future increase in Pakistani exports. The result is that the chosen few of the fashion industry loiter all around the world on state expense exhibiting their fashion collections on themes like the Indus civilizations and area it has passed through. I can’t help comment that the only river flowing in this whole fiasco is the government fund flowing into the bank accounts of these selected few. With the pretext of rich culture being used as a propaganda tool by emerging nations, these over night opportunists have suddenly become fashion icons of Pakistan and like to be known as our cultural ambassadors. A recent example of the ludicrousness and the misrepresentation of the Pakistani culture by foreign office endeavors was the show organized at the Royal Albert Victor Hall in England during Musharraf’s visit. One of the items shown during the supposed representation of the Pakistan culture was a Kathhak dance performance by a renowned classical dance exponent. Anyone with even a vague idea of Pakistani culture would know that it’s hardly part of the Pakistani culture. It is practiced and performed by a very tiny minority, which constitutes a very specific stratum of the Pakistani society. We could count on our fingers the number of actual classical dancers in Pakistan. So the idea to present a classical dance at each and every function organized to show the culture of Pakistan is an absurd one. It can be compared to the get together and event picture’s section in weekly magazines and publications to show the rich and supposedly famous making merry and drinking to their full, which somehow gives the same impression that this particular practice happens all over the society.

What a pity. If only one could explain to the EPB that the only hope of increasing exports in this sector is by promoting the unstitched cloth and the leather goods market. No one is going to import bridal wear and haute couture collections from Pakistan. But all we see is Pakistani embassies all over the world hosting shows exhibiting ridiculous collections designed by a selected few. Similarly there has been tendency by this closed circle dominating the fashion scene of hogging the lime light and not letting the new generation come up and take their place. They seem to be so insecure of the new lot graduating from a host of new fashion schools which have sprung up all over Pakistan. I guess they have a right to do that. Unlike the older crop this new generation at least has some training and professional know how of what they are doing which would make the older generation obsolete in a sense as if they weren’t obsolete already. Its not just these few designers and stylists who have monopolized the industry but there is a number of models as well who refuse to retire and are intent on exhibiting the fifty but nifty collections before they bid us adieu. Even beauty soap seems to have fallen into their trap and refuse to believe that the beauty they reflect is more in the lights and denting and painting tools which are used before a fashion shoot. I bet one could have a nice Halloween party without even the need for costumes and makeup if we were to call this collection of models without the tons of makeup that is painted on them. One view of that party and no one would ever dare go attend any fashion show after that. Last but not the least are the multi nationals. The patronizing of the industry by some multinationals has been a trememednous boon as well. It has infused money into a market which is considered a luxury by the common man and artificially created a demand for fashion goods hardly worth anything in quality and creativity. Extravaganzas like the LUX style award make a mockery out of our society. No one has bothered to tell these people that by arranging for limousines, setting up paid onlookers and autograph seekers, throwing a red carpet and arranging for a lavish set design does not raise the quality of the work that has been done in the arena. Aping the west and faking sophistication and class does not compensate for the lack of hard work and creativity being put in the domestic fashion as well as performing arts scenario. The sight of people receiving awards for having done absolutely nothing except a blind pursuit of money is disgusting. Apart from the exception of categories concerning the music industry and a few other non fashion linked fields, nominations for all the other categories were based on nepotism and bias. It’s just like having a category for building the best automobile in Pakistan. Since nobody has even tried constructing one, we would end up giving the award to a rickshaw mechanic. First we need to accomplish something then give awards for that. No need to laude our achievers until they have achieved something. Charging hefty amounts to people in need of a status symbol for bridal dresses which are made by “karegars” and supposedly designed by the fashion divas is hardly any accomplishment. Mere corporate and state backing does not suggest that there has been real progress in this field and it is destined for something great. In hindsight I would like to opine that lets not all the pizzazz and glamour of the fashion industry blind us to the fact that we are going nowhere in this arena at the moment.

THE INDIAN fashion industry has certainly come off age since the days when all that it could muster were the names of a few known designers like Rohit Bal, JJ Valaya, and Ritu Beri in the circuit. The present fashion circuit is laden with several talented designers who are well known for their expertise in their respective domains, not only in the national arena, but in the international podium as well. So, what really influenced the growth of the Indian fashion industry to such a phenomenal degree? The answer is not very difficult to unravel.

India is one of the oldest civilisations in the world, presenting itself as the converging point for a large number of cultural groups professing varied customs and traditions. Respective customs and traditions bind each of these groups to adopt their own way of dressing, thereby inspiring budding fashion designers to experiment with a huge plethora of options. What is noteworthy in this context is the fact that no matter how large the array of options there are for the designers, their final designs always portray an element of ethnicity that acts as a major crowd puller in the markets. As more and more fashion designers recognised the potential of the country to provide ample ground for their creations, they went on a designing spree and brought about a renaissance of sorts in the fashion industry. India Fashion Industry : At India's independence, industrialization in India was viewed as the engine of growth for the rest of the economy and the supplier of jobs to reduce poverty. By the early 1990s, substantial progress had been made, but industrial growth had failed to live up to expectations. Industrial production increased an average of 6.1 percent in the 1950s, 5.3 percent in the 1960s, and 4.2 percent in the 1970s. The emphasis on large-scale, capital-intensive industries created far fewer jobs than the estimated 10 million annual entrants into the labor force required. Hence unemployment and underemployment remained growing problems in India. In the 1980s, however, industrial production in India rose at an average rate of 6.6 percent. The Indian Government played an important role in industry since independence. In the 1980s and early 1990s, India began increasingly to remove some of the controls on industry. Nevertheless, in the mid-1990s, there were state monopolies for most energy and communications production and services, and the state dominated the steel, nonferrous metal, machine tool, shipbuilding, chemical, fertilizer, paper, and coal industries.
In FY 1992, public enterprises had a turnover of Rs1.7 trillion (see table 24, Appendix). Well over 50 percent of this total was accounted for by ten enterprises, the most important of which were the oil, steel, and coal companies. Public enterprises in aggregate made a net profit after tax of 2.4 percent on capital in FY 1992, but the three oil companies earned 95 percent of these net profits. In fact, 106 of the 233 public companies sustained losses. Some analysts believed that the inefficiency of the public sector in Indian industry was concealed by passing on to consumers the high costs of monopoly products.

As the fashion industry is growing rapidly, there is need for government to encourage it by opening more fashion institutes having research and development facilities, with fashion houses and retail enterprises providing the organisational structure and leadership, says a study. It said Indian fashion design industry is expected to grow much faster than projected (Rs 500 crore), and likely to touch Rs 750 crore by 2012 from the current level of Rs 270 crore, as Indian companies are investing heavily in this sector.Besides, the consumer, with greater exposure to western media, is moving towards designerwear, which is readily available at shopping malls, said the study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM). The study found that the Indian fashion industry accounts for barely 0.2 per cent of the international industry’s net worth. Currently, the global designerwear market is worth about Rs 162,900 crore and growing at 9.5 per cent annually. The study said excluding western wear, the per capita per annum spend on designerwear is Rs 48,627 for men and Rs 56,271 for women. It said about 60 per cent of men shoppers and 72 per cent of women shoppers prefer designerwear in department stores. Comparatively, 46 per cent of men and 38 per cent women vouch for exclusive brand showrooms. The youngsters are among the top spenders on fashionwear as also women in the 41-50 years age group, the study found. The northern and western regions of India account for the highest shopping of designer apparel. The Indian apparel market was worth Rs 111,000 crore in March 2007 and could touch Rs 130,000 crore by 2008. The growth of the branded apparel industry in the interim has been a massive Rs 30, 000 crore in 2006-07, the study said.The Indian fashion industry is also at an advantage over other countries as far as its growth prospects are concerned. India is the third-largest cotton producing country in the world and also possesses an abundance of talented designers. The Indian designerwear industry at present comprises a small number of designers who, though having their own outlets, do not have resources to grow in size and reach economies of scale, the study said.Even established designers in India are unable to tap finances from organised sources easily, since a significant portion of their assets are brands and design talent, which are intangibles and, therefore, difficult to value and attach as collaterals. This has severely inhibited their growth and ability to increase retail presence across the country and abroad. Similarly, there are no organised ways of establishing presence in the fashion capitals of the world like Paris, Milan and New York. As a result, designers have to rely on their personal contacts and relationships for organising fashion shows and creating retail alliances, the study said.
